Brilliance

40 inch x 40 inch acrylic

Featured in the ``Artists of Algonquin`` coffee table book

This painting was inspired by a photograph and reminds me of spring when the forests become almost neon in their colour.

This painting makes me feel happy.

I love this piece in particular because of the almost abstract quality of the sun shining through the leaves. I love the brightness of the whites on the bark of the trees. They feel as though you could walk into the forest and feel the sun on your face.

Below is a poem inspired by this work. It was written by Elana Wolff. Thank you Elana, I think you captured the essence of the painting!

HELIO

for “Brilliance” by Lori Kallay
Things shift while taking Haliburton walks.
You come to a stand of trees; you’re standing
one amongst the others.
Birches’ thin white paper bark un-
furling silent beside you. Sun and sky as quiet.
You don’t speak here.
You disappear and reappear in a different
emotional place—
looking up and filled with the blood of noonday,
helio brilliance.
The animal sadness gone,
suffered by the light.
And the way back saved—no need to mark
these trees with the tip of your knife.
